Pictures and description by William (Bill) Lloyd, Board Member.
Spring 2017 Flooding of upper Loggers Creek From Chatburn Diversion to The Berm.
Included with the photos is a print of the USGS record of River Flow during the flood period.
River flow above 6000 CFS is considered to be in flood alert condition. The head gates at Chatburn
for Loggers Creek were shut when flow in the River reached 6000CFS
River flows above 6000CFS add uncontrolled inflows to Loggers Creek. One of these
points is immediately down stream of the Chatburn Headworks and the photos show the problem area.
There are many more Loggers Creek inflow points during the River flows at 8000CFS and higher.
At 8000+ flow the water level of upper Loggers raised 4’+ above normal and caused
crawl space and minor street flooding near homes adjacent to Loggers Creek.
The high river flows over a period of three months led to bank erosion or cuts and to even more direct delivery of
water to Loggers Creek. Control of the flow during flood for Loggers creek below the berm is by the berm gate
about 1/2 mile downstream from the Chatburn headworks. Sandbagging by the City limited the inflows in selected spots.
No flood associated problems occurred below the berm in the SBWCo system.
The City is owner of property at the Chatburn diversion and the County above that point.
The City and County have been asked to repair the bank cuts and consider other bank improvements
impacting Loggers Creek prior to the spring of 2018.
